SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS 2006

We set off from Sydney at 4am on Friday 21st July, heading to Byron Bay for the Splendour In The Grass Festival.
Me, Lou and James all squashed into the chav mobile and hit the highway while it was still dark and no traffic on the roads (highly recommendable seeing as the journey is about 10 hrs, you don't want to be spending anymore time stuck in traffic). As usual the first stop was Maccas for a large coffee, bacon and egg deli roll and a stretch of the legs.

The only traffic we encountered was from this JCB that had a bit of a blow out!

Stuff the big bannana!!........a quick stop for a bush dump will do!

We arrived at Byron well ahead of schedual and had plenty of time to get beers and set up camp. (Well me and lou put up 3 tents between us while James tucked into the slab of beers.) I suppose he did do all the driving on the way up.

Friday night we went into town to the Beach Side Bar and met Tim and Bec. Had a few beers there then somehow ended up on the Magical Mystery Tour bus....

We ended up at the festival site (about 5km from our camp site). There we met up with Marys crew and stayed for a few drinks around the fire. They had the best camp set-up, with undercover seating area, sound system and portable coal fires! Meanwhile Lou decided to hitch her way back to our camp site. After a few bottles of rum and a load of drunken banter later, me and James decided to stumble back, we had no luck with the golf carts so started walking just as it started raining. Amazingly a silver cab just pulled up from out of nowhere and taxied us safely home.

Saturday 22nd
After a night of continuous downpour, the sun came out to great us for some serious festivaling.

A few smoothies and a bacon sandwich later we were ready to hit Splendour!

Gum boots were recommended by the Head Mistress.....

..........Whatever yeah!!

The Dirty Pikies -
See ya later DJ Shadow!

Sunday 23rd

After Losing my wallet by the end of Saturdays adventures - I had to rely on the good vibes of the festival to home back in on it. That was accomplished sucssfully on Sunday arvo thanks to the good people in the information kiosk (shame all my cash was taken - but just glad to have - me old wallet back). So it was time to get back into it. The line-up was far superior on Sunday anyway. Watched a bit of the Zutons then saw the Vines for a bit before getting some festival tucker to re-energise and get back in time for Snow Patrol. They were quite good live although rather boring for a festival. We all met up again before going to check out Jose Gonzales. Unfortunately everyone else at the festival seemed have the same idea and he was playing in a tent that was far too small. Stayed for the first few songs then had to split. Wolfmother were next on the list and they rocked out!

The first bit of rain came down just as the Scissor Sisters came on and everyone tried to get under cover of the tent. So off to Brian Wilson to check out some more good vibrations......

All in all an excellent festival had.
